Thymios Atzakas was born in Thessaloniki in 1971. He studied the classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis, Hubert Käppel and Carlo Marchione. He was taught the oud and modal music by Ziad Radjab, Βehnam Manadjedi and Ross Daly.
He is a graduate of the New Conservatoire of Thessaloniki, the Music Academy of Köln and the Academy of Music and Drama of Leipzig.
As a classical guitarist and up until 1996, he was a laureate in four international competitions and gave recitals in many guitar festivals.
He lived in Berlin from 1998 until 2004. During the last decade, his main avocations have been the performance and exploration of the oud and other lute instruments, music composition and improvisation. Moreover, as a guitar player, he also performs early and contemporary music.
Thymios has so far performed at international festivals and attended to and participated in many projects in Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Spain, Portugal, England, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Morocco and Syria. He has broadcast and recorded for the Greek Radio and Television, the WDR, Deutsche Welle, MDR, Arte and the BBC.
He has recorded music and appeared with many distinguished musicians such as Βijan Chemirani, Madjid Bekkas, Βehnam Manahenji, Chris Dahlgren, Moises Torres, Ara Malikian, Gareth Lube, Hayden Chisholm, Kemal Dinc, Taner Akyol ,Socrates Sinopoulos, Antonis Anisegkos, Costas Theodorou, Socrates Malamas, Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Maria Thoidou and others. He has also founded music groups, amongst others: the Armos Ensemble, the Tropos Quartett Berlin, and, in collaboration with Antonis Anisegkos, the SOMA.
As of 2005, Thymios teaches the oud and co-ordinates music groups in the sector of Traditional Greek Music at the Department of Musical Arts and Sciences of the Makedonia University and he is the artistic director of the international music festival “Music Village “ (www.music-village.gr)

O Θύμιος Ατζακάς γεννήθηκε στην Θεσσαλονίκη το 1971. Σπούδασε κλασική κιθάρα με τους Κώστα Κοτσιώλη, Hubert Käppel και Carlo Marchione, ενώ ούτι και τροπική μουσική διδάχθηκε δίπλα στους Ziad Radjab, Βehnam Manadjedi και Ross Daly. Eίναι απόφοιτος του Νέου Ωδείου Θεσσαλονίκης, της Μουσικής Ακαδημίας της Κολωνίας και της Ακαδημίας Μουσικής και Θεάτρου της Λειψίας.
Μέχρι το 1996 βραβεύτηκε ως κιθαριστής σε τέσσερις διεθνείς διαγωνισμούς και έδωσε ρεσιτάλ σε πολλά φεστιβάλ κιθάρας.
Από το 1998 ως το 2004 έζησε στο Βερολίνο. Την τελευταία δεκαετία κύρια ενασχόληση του είναι η ερμηνεία και η εξερεύνηση του ουτιού και άλλων λαουτοειδών, η συγγραφή μουσικής και ο αυτοσχεδιασμός, ενώ παράλληλα εμφανίζεται και ως εκτελεστής κιθάρας στο ρεπερτόριο της παλαιάς και νέας μουσικής.
Έως σήμερα έχει ερμηνεύσει σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ και επιμελήθηκε ή έλαβε μέρος σε πολλά projects (Ελλάδα, Κύπρος, Ρουμανία, Ισπανία, Πορτογαλία, Aγγλία, Γαλλία, Ιταλία, Βέλγιο, Γερμανία, Ελβετία, Μαρόκκο και Συρία), ενώ ηχογράφησε ή μαγνητοσκόπησε για την ελληνική ραδιοτηλεόραση, το WDR, την Deutsche Welle, το MDR, το Arte και το BBC.
Εμφανίστηκε και δισκογράφησε με πολλούς αναγνωρισμένους μουσικούς όπως οι: Βijan Chemirani, Madjid Bekkas, Εfren Lopez, Βehnam Manahenji, Chris Dahlgren, Moises Torres, Ara Malikian, Gareth Lube, Hayden Chisholm, Kemal Dinc, Taner Akyol, Σωκράτης Σινόπουλος, Αντώνης Ανισέγκος, Κώστας Θεοδώρου, Σωκράτης Μάλαμας, Θανάσης Παπακωσταντίνου, Μαρία Θωΐδου κ.ά., ενώ παράλληλα έχει ιδρύσει μουσικά σχήματα όπως το Armos Ensemble, το Tropos Quartett Berlin, και, μαζί με τον Αντώνη Ανισέγκο, το ΣΩΜΑ.
Aπό το 2005 διδάσκει ούτι και συντονίζει μουσικά σύνολα στον τομέα ελληνικής παραδοσιακής μουσικής του Τμήματος Μουσικής Τέχνης και Επιστήμης του Πανεπιστημίου Μακεδονίας και παράλληλα είναι υποψήφιος διδάκτορας στο Τμήμα Πολιτισμικής Τεχνολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου του Αιγαίου (Μυτιλήνη).
Από το 2006 ανέλαβε τον καλλιτεχνικό προγραμματισμό της διεθνούς συνάντησης μουσικών/καλλιτεχνών ‘Μουσικό Χωριό’, που πραγματοποιείται κάθε καλοκαίρι στον Άγιο Λαυρέντιο Πηλίου.
Τέλος, είναι ενεργός στον χώρο της ψηφιακής παραγωγής ήχου και ψηφιακής αναπαραγωγής πολιτισμικών γεγονότων.
